PNA is a synthetic analogue of DNA in which the ribose phosphate backbone has been replaced by a polyamide chain.
PNA can be used in the same applications as conventional DNA/RNA but because of its unique backbone has a number of advantages:
- PNA binds to complementary DNA/RNA with higher affinity and greater specificity than conventional oligonucleotides
- PNA is more stable than DNA or RNA as they are resistant to nucleases and proteases
- PNA can be hybridised at lower salt concentrations than DNA or RNA which leads to higher stringency
These properties make PNA ideal reagents for antisense and antigene applications, and as probes for molecular diagnostics and microarrays.
As UK distributor for Panagene Inc (South Korea) crb can offer the following products and services:
- PNA Telomere FISH probes
- Fmoc PNA Monomers
- PNA Probes for Globin Reduction
- PANArrays
- miRNA Inhibitors
- PNA Clamp Mutation Detection Kits – New!

crb offers custom PNAs synthesised with Panagene’s patented BTS technology. This approach allows the routine production of longer PNA oligomers in higher purity than conventional Boc or Fmoc-based methods.
|
|
- Scale: 50 nmole to gram
- Length: up to 24 residues routinely. Longer PNAs are not ususally necessary due to the very high binding affinity of PNA for DNA or RNA
- Dyes or biotin can be attached to N-terminus, C-terminus
|
|
- PNA can be supplied conjugated to cell penetrating peptides to promote cellular uptake
- Optional Lys or PEG spacers can be incorporated to increase solubility
- ISO9001:2000 certified

PANArrays™ exploit the excellent stability and specificity of PNA to overcome the limitations of DNA-based arrays.
- Long shelf life
- Reliable SNP detection
- Excellent for long DNA detection
Custom PANArrays™ can be developed for SNP analysis, genotyping, expression profiling, and detection of microrganisms. Using Panagene’s FLASH technology, labelling with a fluorescent dye can be carried out after binding of the DNA to the PNA microarray, saving on the use of expensive dyes and allowing for more efficient PCR.

PNAClamps are unique probes that facilitate the detection of mutated DNA sequences amongst wild-type sequences. PNAClamps exploit the strong binding affinity of PNA to its complementary DNA to prevent PCR amplication of wild-type DNA sequences whilst allowing amplication of mutated DNA.
PNAClamps™ offer the following advantages:
- Easy and simple detection of gene mutations by real-time PCR
- Robust, consistent, reliable and cost effective
- Highly specific (0.1-1% mutated DNA can be detected)
- Only small quantity of DNA sample is required (10-50 ng)
- Compatible with various real-time PCR machines
- Save time and effort as same protocol works for all PNAClamps

PNA-based miRNA inhibitors offer numerous advantages over conventional inhibitors:
- Highly sequence specific
- No cytotoxicity
- Resistant to cellular nucleases
crb offers the complete range of Panagene’s human miRNA inhibitors. Other miRNA inhibitors can be made on request.

crb offers PNA probes for reducing RNA in whole blood samples. These probes bind tightly to globin RNA preventing globin cRNA synthesis, which leads to improved sensitivity against non-globin cRNA.

PNA Telomere FISH probes are useful tools for determining telomere length. PNA-based FISH probes offer fast hybridisation and less background noise than conventional DNA-based probes.

“In our research we use peptide nucleic acids (PNA) as antisense agents in bacterial applications. PNAs are better known for their many applications in mammalian systems, but there are also exciting possibilities to develop antisense antibacterial agents and use gene specific PNAs for bacterial gene function studies or even as diagnostic probes.
PNAs provide nuclease stability and high binding affinity, and these are important features that enable unique applications. When working with bacteria, we find that PNAs show superior cell uptake properties, and uptake can be enhanced by attached peptides. There are a variety of nucleic acid analogues and mimics available, and one advantage with PNA is that the pseudo-peptide backbone allows relatively simple attachment of peptide sequences during synthesis. For several years we have used PNAs and peptide-PNAs obtained from PANAGENE via their UK distributor crb.
We have always been satisfied with product quality. Also, on several occasions we submitted questions about chemistry and the crb staff efficiently came back with answers and suggestions from their scientists. For researchers who are interested in using PNA in bacterial or other applications, I strongly recommend crb as a supplier.”
